Things You Can Donate Instead of Money

Donating doesn't always mean volunteering your time, it can also mean giving items to those in need.

At FreddyMatch, we are always looking for unique ways to make a positive impact, and sometimes that doesn't mean reaching into your wallet.

Volunteering your time is one of the most rewarding ways to contribute to causes you care about. Whether it’s helping out at a local shelter, mentoring students, or lending a hand at a community event, your time can be just as valuable as money. Many organisations, including those partnered with FreddyMatch, rely on the dedication of volunteers to carry out their missions.

Our founder, Roxane, recently inspired us with a truly remarkable act—donating breast milk. Her generosity reminded us that there are many other valuable contributions we can make to help those in need.

In this blog, we’ll explore some meaningful alternatives to monetary donations that can make a significant difference in your community.

Please check with charities before you make a donation! We’d love to hear from you what you donate and where? Does your organisation accept donations? Let us know what you are in need of.

1. Breast Milk

Roxane’s donation highlighted the incredible value of breast milk for babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and for families who may be struggling to provide their infants with the nourishment they need. Donating breast milk to a milk bank ensures that vulnerable babies get the vital nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. If you're a breastfeeding mother, donating breast milk is a powerful way to give back and support new lives.

Check out 'Mothers Milk Bank' and 'Life Blood' who accept breastmilk donations.

2. Things you can make

Check out our self directed opportunities on FreddyMatch. We have everything from knitting nests for wildlife to fidget blankets for dementia patients or packages of sanitary items.

3. Clothing and Household Items

If you have gently used clothing, household items, or furniture that you no longer need, donating them to charities or shelters can greatly benefit families in need. Items like warm clothes, blankets, and everyday essentials can help people through difficult times, especially during colder months or in emergency situations.

Most op shops are always in need of donations but other organisations such as ‘Support the Girls’ and ‘Dress for Success’ are often seeking clothing donations.

4. Blood and Plasma

One of the simplest yet most impactful things you can donate is blood. Blood and plasma donations are critical for hospitals, and just one donation can save multiple lives. Whether it’s for surgeries, accident victims, or those with chronic illnesses, donating blood is a life-saving act that can take as little as an hour of your time.

Find out where you can donate blood and plasma at 'Lifeblood'.

5. Books and Educational Materials

Books are gateways to knowledge, imagination, and opportunity. If you have extra books or educational materials, consider donating them to schools, some libraries, or community centres, charities or your local street library. These donations can make a world of difference to children and adults who might not have access to learning resources.

There are plenty of charities that are in need of book donations including:

6. Skills and Expertise

If you have specialised skills or knowledge, donating your expertise can be immensely valuable. Whether you're a web developer, graphic designer, or financial advisor, many not-for-profit organisations need help with essential tasks to keep their organisations running smoothly. You can also offer free workshops or mentoring to share your knowledge with others.

Email us on roxane@freddymatch.org for more information.

7. Food

Food banks and homeless shelters are always in need of non-perishable food items to support individuals and families facing food insecurity. If you have surplus food from a recent event or pantry staples you can spare, donating them to a local food bank is a simple way to help ensure no one goes hungry.

The 'Food Bank' and 'Vinnies' are commonly in need of food donations.

8. Pet Supplies

If you're an animal lover, consider donating pet food, blankets, towels, and toys to animal shelters. Many shelters operate on limited budgets, and donations of pet supplies help care for animals awaiting their forever homes.

RSPCA and Safe Pets, Safe Families are two organisations who are often in need for pet supplies. You can also stop into your local pet store and donate to their drop off point.

9. Toys and Games and baby items

Donating toys and games can bring joy to children in difficult circumstances. Whether it’s to a children’s hospital or a holiday toy drive, your donation can brighten a child’s day and provide them with a bit of comfort and entertainment.

There are plenty of charities that are in need of toy, games and baby item donations including:

10. Gift Cards or Vouchers

If you have unused or partially used gift cards, consider donating them to someone who can make good use of them. Charities and shelters can distribute these to individuals or families in need, allowing them to purchase essentials like groceries, clothing, or personal care items. It's a simple but effective way to provide support, especially during the holiday season or in times of crisis.

Starlight and Safe Steps are two popular charities that take gift card donations.

There are many ways to make a difference that go beyond financial donations. Whether it’s through breast milk, time, or everyday items, every act of kindness counts.

At FreddyMatch, we are inspired by stories like our incredible Roxane’s, and we hope this blog encourages you to think about the different ways you can contribute to your community.

Whatever you choose to donate, remember that the value of your contribution goes beyond what can be measured in dollars. Every bit helps, and your generosity can have a lasting impact on many within the community.
